Descriptions and Introductions

As odd as it may seem, these two ideas really do go together. When we are introduced to someone for the first time, we tend to focus on features that will help us remember his or her name. See the connection?

Description is an amazing tool in the writer's "bag of tricks;" it is one thing, if done right, that can keep the reader focused on the writing. I find that the books I love best are penned by authors who are superskilled in description. Sure, I like action and even some semi-steamy scenes, but a good description helps the movie in my mind become so much better than what I can see on the big screen.  Don't forget that a good introduction grabs the reader's attention in some way, going from the general to the specific, and ends with a strong, 3-part thesis statement. So, having said all that, let's get started.

Blog Assignment: There are two!  (1) p. 51, Writing Assignment 2, Paragraph 2; and (2) p. 205, Writing Assignment 1, write an introductory paragraph for any two statements listed.

My Response:
Description:  My sister's face is indelibly etched in my memory. Maybe that's because we are seven years apart and had more of a mother-daughter relationship than a sister to sister one. Because of a uniquely rare autoimmune disease, she is bald. She once had amazingly thick mahogany colored hair that she labored over for hours on end as a teenager. Now she wishes for a bad hair day! Since this disease has removed ALL hair from her body, she doesn't have any eyebrows. Needing to bolster her self-esteem, she had her eyebrows  tattooed, and the casual observer would never know. Those lovely eyebrows frame one of her best features -- large, intelligent, doe-like brown eyes that watch every move you make. Her nose has a slight crook in it from the many times she has broken it, but it is one of those features that make you smile because of its slight imperfection. You would definitely notice her full, movie star pouty lips. They frame large, white teeth that are always showing because she is almost always smiling (she's definitely always talking so you'd see them either way). All in all, my sister is a Latin beauty whose imperfections only point to how beautiful she is -- inside and out.

Introductions: (Remember, you MUST do two, even though I am doing only one.)  Oh, that summer sun is smiling down from a cloudless blue sky. I have two weeks off and I know I need to take a vacation.  It's been about ten years since I have had the opportunity to plan a vacation, but this year I'm going to do it. I've been to the Caribbean islands, Mexico, and Costa Rica. If I had to pick one to revisit, I'd return to Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a wonderful vacation destination because you can experience a tropical cloud forest, you can enjoy its immaculate black sand beaches, and you can visit the once active volcano Irazu.

Ryleigh has beautiful blonde hair with little ringlets of spiral curls dangling below her porcelain complexion. When I reminiscence of my daughter’s face, I see purity at its finest. Age has yet to touch such young beautiful and delicate skin. Her piercing blue eyes are mesmerizing. I find myself at times just staring at her and smiling. She wears her little delicate pearl earrings below on her ear lopes. Next to her lips, the gods painted the prefect color of pink to give her perfection that a plastic surgeon could only wish to construct. Looking at her face you see her facial structure; it is strong with high cheek bones, compliments from her relatives that are related to Seminole Indians. She suddenly captures your heart with a smile that radiates a light blush of excitement across her face. Beautiful is an understatement. Suddenly, Ryleigh turns around and begins to play in the room again with her fellow classmates as if she was never interrupted by anyone’s presence. I stand farther down in the corridor watching her, admiring her youth and innocence. After watching my daughter blossom into a young, beautiful, and intelligent child I find it difficult to watch, seeing her grow up. This was never the plan; she was never allowed to grow up. She was to stay my baby forever. Ah, these are the moments that can be heart wrenching for a mother.

After working here three years at my job I have accumulated three weeks of vacation time starting in January of 2012. I am excited; I have not had a vacation in years. I am actually talking, maybe even booking my first cruise with my family very soon. I married quite young and never went on a honeymoon because I wanted to buy my first home; therefore, I would love to take a cruise to Jamaica! Jamaica is a wonderful vacation destination because of the beautiful pristine beaches. My husband and I also love the local cuisine. Due to the increase cost of airplane tickets, I find deals all the time on expedia.com for cruises thus making it even more affordable for my family and me to get away. We are looking now into Disney cruise lines. They are quite popular with families searching for similar destinations to retreat too. Plus, they make the cruise more memorable for children. It’s more family orientated. Needless to say, I will look forward to be sitting on a beach in a lawn chair watching my daughter play in the sand in Jamaica!

“All glory comes from daring to begin” according to this quote taken out of the text book on page 205. Studying with a partner or classmate can be beneficial to anyone who wants to improve their grades in school. You have to want to work towards that goal; and actually doing it means to accomplish some hard work. Placing study time in your schedule with your fellow classmates can help cover a broader area of your subject you want learn during the preparation for a test or final. It’s amazing what you can do when two minds work together to help one another. Our brain does perceive information through three types of learners. First, auditory learners can benefit from reading out loud, or listening to the material on a recorded tape. Secondly, there is a kinthestic learner, who benefits from by actually working with their hands, writing, putting together the physical pieces of a puzzle together. And finally there is the visual learner. This person can look at something and understand the patterns in graphs, charts, and most material covered in books; therefore, making the effort to study with a fellow classmate or friend can be beneficial to any academic grade outcome. You just have to work together to accomplish this goal.

Sanibel Island is a wonderful vacation destination. Sanibel is located on the West Coast of Florida and after driving over a causeway you have arrived. This destination is known for its compulsive shell pickers like me. Sanibel gives anyone the opportunity to set forth on bird watching tours, bike ride on 22 miles of paved paths, and soak up the sun with 15 miles of unspoiled beaches. For the avid exerciser there are copious opportunities such as kayaking, paddle boarding and bike trails. With an island that contains no stoplights this has reached it’s potential for the newlyweds, a family that is bound together by their soccer mother, or the “Average Joe” that leads the life of “No shoes, no shirt, no problem”.

Serious illness--- our own or someone else’s--- sometimes can bring surprising blessings. What challenges us will make us stronger whether it’s an illness or a daily struggle in life. We all know life goes and there is a meaning as to why we suffer or rejoice. Some people may have had a bitter feeling towards life, and once they fall short with an illness it humbles them. From my personal experience, I have a grandmother suffering from Alzhiemers Disease our family continues to rejoice in the life she’s lived. She lived as a good person and will die as one. A blessing helps us realize what makes us happy in life. Sometimes the negative experiences can only help us become positive.

  3. Description

Some believe the eyes are the “Windows to thy soul”. Emily Marie is one face that is unforgettable as well as the witty comments that come forth from her mouth. She holds herself greatly, yet not in vain. A flick of her hair and you see radiant tints of browns and blonde hair. She maintains this sleek look by various hair products that are organic. Emily’s hair is lusciously long and is comparable to a waterfall the way it swivels down. After she folds her hair behind her ear, in a coy manner, you sight her dainty ear that is not touched by a prick of an earring. Her eyelashes are greatly voluminous, the type that only high fashion models that exhibit this beauty for a Chanel Commercial may acquire. Her eyes cascade like the deep blue ocean with a trim of green leading us to question their extraordinary existence. Her complexion, a Swedish skin color that glows with a light tan. For her mother’s side is from Malta, and her father’s side comes from Switzerland. Emily Marie is my God sister, best friend, “Rembrandts Light”, and neighbor. I feel as though I’ve known this friendship to be true since God decided to call a place Earth and align the sky with stars. If you could only see her inner beauty the way I do then you would be astonished by her values, morals, and artistic feel for life.

  4. Description:
My loving wife’s face is the most memorable in my mind. Being in the military I was always away from her, and her face was constantly in my mind to get through my hard times. Her skin has the contrast of silky milk with a few freckles carefully staggered from cheek to cheek. The nose on my wife is stubby and cute like a Who a character out of a Dr. Seuss book. I get lost in her eyes when the sun light repels off of them, they are light brown with a unique design of art lured in them. When she smiles her teeth to gum ratio is perfect while her lips around them glisten as if they are saying, “kiss me”. Alicia is her name and the face matches the name. Alicia is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with and her face is one of the qualities that is the reason why we are together.

    Introduction #1:
When we study on our own we tend to have distractions or we end procrastinating leaving it for another day. Studying is not exciting at all even with all of the new technology these days that can help us. For some individuals it’s easy for them to study alone and find some way to make it interesting but for the majority, not so true. The fact I after hundreds of studies studying with some else can pay off in better grades.

    Introduction #2:
For generations we Americans have been trying to find a perfect vacation destination. Some are looking for adult fun like extreme amusement rides that can make them soil themselves. Others may be trying to find a vacation spot that is family friendly of all ages. We constantly search for these attractions and sometime all of our life for the perfect place that contours our own needs and wants out of a vacation destination. Disney World Multiple amusement parks are the most wonderful vacation destination that anyone of all ages can very much enjoy.

It could have been worse. It was the summer before my daughter Precious senior year of high school. Senior picture schedule was scheduled for September 16, 2011. Precious was playing basketball in Orlando Florida at the Disney Sports Arena-Disney Classic Tournament. I receive a call from the Coach at work to tell me that the EMT’s are taken her to the hospital, she have an eye injury. A thousand questions went through me mind; will she be okay, will it interfere with her eyesight and so on. I arrived at the hospital were I was greeted by the doctor with a smile, that answered my first question without him saying a word. She is okay. The doctor told me she had received an extremely hard hit to the eye which cut her under her right eye. The cut is too wide and deep to scorcher because it is her face and they wanted to minimize as much scaring a possible. This is my daughter with the skin color that looks like milk chocolate just before it cools. Eyebrows slightly touch to make you take notice how unique they are. Her noses have a wide flat bone structure; which accrued when she fell on her nose at the age of three years old. Her lips are slightly heart shaped with a little fullness though out which looks like she’s puckered to kiss and a set of teeth that look like pearls that was just picked out of the oyster. Precious is a beautiful young lady who inner straight allowed her to overcome that adversity. She did take her senior pictures which three month later and from the smile on her face you knew she had receive the scar doing what she love to do, and it could have been worse.

    Introduction:

Marriage is the death of romance. Romance a romantic attachment or episode between lovers. Marriage is a union that is built on the foundation of love; for better or worst, in sickness and in health, death do us part. Love is unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others. Not thinking about your self, actually giving up ones self to cleave to another with total commitment. For better or worst; teeth and tongue fall out every now- and- then, after all they have been through together, who are we not to give it our best. You have never heard of teeth divorcing tongue because of romance. In sickness and in health, know one ask to be sick so why should we walk away from the person we once said we love. Let the strong bear the infirmities of the weak; hang on in there, tomorrow mite be your tern. Death do us part; to be absent in your mortal body. Marriage is the death of romance only if you’re dead.

Sometime serious illness-our own or someone else’s-sometimes can bring surprising blessings. Maybe you or someone you know has asked the question way me? I pose a question back, way not you? Serious illness is not something that anyone asks for it happen and we have to deal with it. There is nothing that happens to us here on earth that through faith we can not overcome. We live in these body and thing are subject to change at any moment. We where born with many different genetic and chromosomal disorders. Second hand smoke has not made it easy for any of us either, not to mention the different factories and diesel fuel trucks and their toxins , just to name a few. Cancer doesn't discriminate, it has touch almost every family across the world. We know that there is nothing knew under the sun, and what ever the serious illness, know you can be the blessing. Someone may be watching you to see how you handle your illness. “We are overcome by the blood of the lamb and the words of our testimony". Surprise, faith is your straight to be a blessing to someone else.

Met her about 10 years ago as boss end employee relationship. Her name is Dora the Explorer (loves the outdoors), Robin Williams (very funny and witty) Eduard Lowe(inventor of cat litter), Energizer Bunny (she keeps going and...), Emilia Earnhardt (yes, she pilots airplanes), Jewel (she sang in bars to put herself through college),Warren Buffet (without the 'B' for billions, but she's done very well for herself), Barbi (Very attractive) Hillary Clinton(for being tough and taking names) and even Monica Lewinsky... If we can put all these traits of personalities together, she has what is most remarkable about those named above and more. I will withhold her real name to protect her identity. One of my best friends and great example of success!!!

    YAE!, for Space exploration.
Juno Space Craft is about to leave to Planet Jupiter for 5 years, so we can learn about the largest planet of our solar system. We have sent a few 'rovers' to our neighbor Mars and we are about to send Curiosity to explore a particular crater in that planet. More intriguing, there is a Trojan meteor orbiting Earth (no worries, no threat to us yet). Although NASA has grounded all space shuttles, plans for space explorations are on going. Consequently, we can find out our origins, and where we are going from here.

Love abiding, only lasts until the spouse signs that paper, transferring over all his or her rights to the partner, according to some comedians on television. Not so fast!... When love is followed by friendship, determination and commitment, there is always room for romance. As a team, there are many possibilities a couple can achieve romantic, financial and longevity success in their search for happiness.

  9. Description: My wonderful aunt left our family far too early hence her face is engraved in my memory, as she was so beautiful. Some family members seem to think that I resemble her; I do not believe that to be true, in that case I would be a super model. She passed away at the age of eighteen, I was four years old but the image of her face stayed with me. My aunt had long thick shiny ebony hair; and a perfect oval face with high cheekbones, and eyebrows most women paid to have; they were permanently shaped in an arch. Her skin was like melted caramel with a dash of chocolate. Although she was very ill no one could tell until the day she expired. She had thick long eyelashes that covered big wide amber colored eyes that pierced every soul that entered her room. She had the most attractive nose, a raised tip with a gentle concave curve; almost like little dimples on each side, followed by well sculpted full lips that consisted of a continuing light brown lip liner. They surrounded beautiful naturally straight white teeth that one could see from a distance, hence she was always smiling. Her physical appearance was nothing compare to the love and beauty she carried inside, although she was suffering most of the time, I do not recall her ever complaining or upset, others would say that she did not deserve that, but not her, I can truly say that she died with a smile on her face.

    Writing assignment # 1
Marriage is the death of romance. Only if couples allow their romance to die. Marriage is a union from God; a threefold cord is stronger than two. True, building a lasting and happy marriage is difficult, but it is certainly possible. Many couples have been happily married for more than 50 or 60 years. What is the secret? They constantly are working at it. One common mistake that we tend to do is forget that we are all imperfect humans. It takes two to have a marriage; same as romance. Therefore couples should continue to do the same things that led them to fall in love, and spend the rest of their lives together, thus to keep the romance they once shared alive.

Studying with someone else can pay off. Sharing knowledge with someone else takes less time and energy than when learning the material alone. Furthermore, by discussing the material with the other individual, one is prone to come up with ideas they never would have thought of on your own. Also, studying with another student will help both individuals to be motivated to work harder. It’s easier for some to remember the material when studying with another person, rather than studying alone.

    Description of a memorable face.
The face of my beautiful daughter at birth proved to be very memorable, and will never be forgotten as long as I live. I distinctly remember her flat forehead that lies between the curvature of her hairline and her eyebrow that reminds me of her father. Also, below her eyebrows are two bright bold and dark-brown eyes that stare right into mine. The innocent look in her eyes reassured me of her happiness as a new born baby who has no worries or cares of a world that can be so unkind. In the middle of her face is a small pointed nose with a ridge that smells the scent of her mother when we both bond together. Also, inferior to her lips is a round shaped chin that high-lighted her oval-shaped face which reminds me of her grandmother. Her warm smile that brightens up my day, yes! The kind of smile that motivates me to face the everyday challenges that live has to offer. Clearly, my daughter is more than a treasure to me, and she will always be my little princess.

    Introductory Paragraph # 1
Jamaica is a wonderful vacation destination, and is considered to be one of the hotspots in the Caribbean. This beautiful mountainous island has brought many tourists from around the world to visit its luscious rain forest as well as the famous blue-mountain peak. The beautiful white sandy beaches are among the famous attractions that keep foreigners, and locals coming back for more. Also, the warm hospitality of the islanders has made this island very popular with their everyday quote “yeahmon,” that fills most foreigners with laughter. In addition, the cultural diversity that strongly exist makes it easy for everyone to mingle and have fun with little or “no problem” at all. As a Jamaican born who knows all the enjoyment this vacation spot has to offer, I look forward to visiting there each year, mainly to enjoy the Dunn’s River Falls, sight-seeing, and the entertaining reggae music. All in all, a vacation on this island is something to look forward to because it is well worth it.

    Introductory Paragraph #2
My preferred study technique is to study alone first before meeting with someone to reinforce and revise the material that is being studied. Therefore, when I study, I slowly review the material and try to comprehend the information as best as possible. After summarizing, I make flashcards which is an easy and quick way to review my notes. As a result, this method has helped me to better understand, store, and recall the information when needed. For example, it is easier to take the flashcards than to take a big book for travel. Also, formulating questions for revision is a common practice that helps to further cement this information. When all this hard work is done, it puts me in a better position to meet with another person to review and share ideas and clarify any misconceptions. All in all, although studying alone is an effective study strategy, it is more beneficial to study with someone else which will assure better grades.
