Give Me an Example to Make Your Point Clear

Learning is an interesting activity. Some concepts are easy to grasp, but others challenge your understanding. Have you ever come across a definition that was so intangible that it took examples in order for you to really grasp what the definition meant? It’s like that with a lot of science terms. Without those examples, sometimes that definition is just gibberish. Those examples are what illustration is all about. The information provided – sometimes in the form of a story, sometimes in the form of facts – are what makes your point, your definition, your statement understandable.

Blog Assignment: This week you will write a paragraph that illustrates your main idea through the use of examples. You will respond to either topic #4 or #10 on page 214 of the textbook.

My Response: I have been married to my husband for 13 years. It is our habit to go on a “date night” each week. After all these many weeks, our dates could be boring if we didn’t purposely seek out unusual places to go. I have a great suggestion for a fun night out – couples painting. Groupon sent me notification of a special deal for a Tuesday night couples painting event that included all materials and a free drink for each of us. My husband has some artistic talent; I, on the other hand, don’t. However, the older I have gotten, the more I am convinced that my way of looking at the world has changed.  I believe I could probably do something passable with paint and a brush. So, I bit. I bought the coupon, reasonable for a date night, and picked a canvas that we really liked – Splatter Tulips – and then scheduled our date. We dressed down – no paint splatters on nice clothing – and headed out. The studio where the art lesson was to take place was spacious and filled with couples of every age. The instructor was a young woman who gave us step-by-step instructions and before our eyes our canvases were transformed into works of art. We sipped on our complementary drinks and had the option to purchase additional glasses of wine or soda.  We left that evening with two works of art (which now hang side by side in the living room), new painting friends, and a renewed conviction that we were, indeed, budding artists. The evening was filled with creativity and laughter. What more could you want from a date night?

A television that sends a violent but hopeful message is Law and Order special victims unit. This show is based on the criminal justice law and takes place in New York City. I’ve also enjoyed watching this show because it shows you what can happen, outside this cold world. You can be in the parking lot, getting into your car and someone can come up behind you, and knock you out with Chloroform. Law and order shows these type of scenarios to show the world, it can happen to anyone at anytime of day. Sometimes the the victim ends being alive, if the were kidnap, giving the parent hope that his/her child is still alive but on the other hand, sometimes they were murder leaving the parent in grief. The show doesn’t always end up a happy ending but the hopeful message it does send, is for us to be more alert of our surroundings. Three Years ago One of my team mate was killed in a fatal shooting. It was the day that summer started and she was so excited because she just finished her junior year at Lake Worth High and couldn’t wait to start her Senior year in the fall. The class of 2010 decided that they was going to meet up at a club, to party the night away of being officially seniors. A couple of the classmates was outside, just chilling and chatting away. When all of a sudden a car pull up and just shot his gun randomly into the crowd and sadly, Amanda Dejesus was at the wrong place at the wrong time. She was only 17 years old and the star on the Lake Worth High Trojans Soccer team, She was in the ROTC program and a bright girl with a big future.

  3. Once a week, my boyfriend and I, go on a date to some strange but fun places. One place is Burgerfi in Downtown Delray. This is a burger joint. You have the opportunity to create your own style burger. Yes they have premade options but who wants to be that boring when you have the opportunity to create a masterpiece of your own? You can choose from up to five patties, all types of condiments such as lettuce, relish, banana peppers, onions, etc. Then they have fries that are out of this world. Parmesan cheese fries. Come on who can beat that amazing taste? The best part, IT'S CHEAP! Another place we have been is Cheddar's. Kind of like Ruby Tuesday's with a touch of sea food. A wonderful place to come and enjoy a nice sit down, cheap meal.

One show that sends a violent message would be the walking Dead on AMC. Even though it is a really good TV series and it is not real it dose sent out some violent messages. This series show what to do to survive from the zombie apocalypse. Like how they have to shoot at the zombie in the head to kill it and save themselves from becoming one. Also how people had to project their family and other group members from people that had gone crazy. For example, when Rick had to go kill his best friend Shane because he was going to kill Rick. So he had to do it to keep his family and the group safe. Another thing also was how later on in the series the Governor used his people to get revenge on Rick, which did not turn, out well. What I mean was that when the Governor and his people were on their way back to WoodBerry from ambushing Rick and his group the Governor decided to go kill those people and make up a lie to tell the rest of his people what really happened. Also another example is how the Governor captured and torture Glenn and Maggie in till they released the location of their group and Rick. So even though the Walking dead is not real and is a really good TV series it can still send out some violent messages.

  5. Both 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom are reality television shows, where cameras follow the lives of pregnant teens until the birth of their child and the months and years following. The show focuses on the relationship between two teen parents, their perspective families, friends, and the struggles teen mothers go through in raising their children. The show can be misconstrued with not understanding reality from fame. The 16 & Pregnant show, shows teens that giving birth is a life changing event. Some of the teen moms drop out of school, or the fathers can’t handle the responsibility of being a young father. Sometimes there may not be family support or the struggle is getting harder because there is an extra mouth to feed. You have to get up in the middle of the night because baby is crying-NO REST. You can’t be a normal teen, like hanging out with your friends at the mall, going to the movies, school dances or other school functions and etc. I personally can relate to this because I became a teen mom at age fifteen, and I turned sixteen two months later. I struggled with trying to finish school, raise a child alone because her father was in prison, and learning first hand that raising a child doesn’t come with a manual. In addition, I was working minimum wage jobs just to provide diapers, formula, and clothing. There was no hanging out with friends, and if so baby was on my hip. On the other hand, teens may find it not so bad being pregnant because you are on television. They may become infatuated with being famous, getting lots of attention, and being recognized by millions of people worldwide. They may crave more of the fame than realize the severity of the whole situation. From my experience I would do things differently if given the opportunity to, what about you if you had become a teen mom?

  6. Cold case TV show has been my favorite show of all time. It is intense, devastating, and leaves you on the edge of your couch. According to the National Institute of Justice, Cold case is any case whose probative investigative leads have been exhausted. The television show contains a series of crimes committed that are unsolved and the cold case team goes back in time to put the puzzle pieces together. It sends a hopeful message to families and friends who've lost a loved one. Imagine finding someone you loved dead and no one convicted for it, you've waited years and no detective has been able to solve the crime committed so, they give up. Then, a team of cold case investigators reopen the case to find out who committed the crime and what actually happened. It leaves you feeling relieved that these people care enough to go further into research into a case that was claimed “unsolvable”. This show leaves a hopeful message through the determination of these cold case detectives, it is phenomenal because it will leave you satisfied that you got the justice you and your loved one deserved.

  7. A different type of environment for something romantic or stress relieving would be a Lallapalooza Concert. There is a lot going on at once and loud. Multiple bands and small events along side the area.It may be a bit much, but overall extremely fun. Imagine though, getting ready for a date not knowing what your doing except for dinner. He picks you up and you end up at a raging concert with a bunch of great bands. The dinner is a corn on the cobb with mystery seasoning. I think if a guy wants to take you to a full day concert for a date, especially a first date. That would qualify for unusual.

  8. Elton and I have been together for six years now. and every anniversary we try to do things a little different, you know keep it spicy in not to ordinary. Thoughts filled my head where would be a unusual anniversary place to go with my boyfriend. not to mention again its was our anniversary weekend. One evening coming home to a big surprise that we going to Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando ,Florida was quite breathe taking. Because that's one of the best hotels in central Florida. we stayed three day four nights. checking into our hotel room first thing I could do was scream because like dang the view was amazing, We had a Jacuzzi ,wine already iced in ready to drink, Rosa droppings on the bed ,also all in the bath tub that was already ran. I was so shocked he went all out for our anniversary weekend. I couldn't stop the hugs in kisses .in addition to us getting settled into our room we got a knock on the door to inform us that our spa treatment is waiting. I just punched my boyfriend because he actually listen to me when I said I need to go to a spa. in I new from that moment this anniversary is going to be the best of them all, in so is this love.

  9. I always have been the adventurous type of girl, I love to explore. Me and my sons father Luis always try to do something new and exciting. Our first date went well, we went to the drive-in to see Paranormal Activity and afterwards we went to the beach. Ever since then, we liked to go out and have fun, we would go to Boca, down south to Miami, Orlando, etc. We make 3 years in October and for our anniversary we are planning to take a cruise to the Bahamas. Since me and him have busy schedules with work, school and our son we are planning just a 4 day stay. I think taking a cruise is such a romantic nice getaway for you and your partner. I need to relax and this trip I know for a fact will please me. Bahamas is beautiful and I have never been there before so this date/anniversary should be the best one ever. I am not really picky when it comes to the setting of my date but as long as were both happy, then we can go anywhere.

  10. I'm not really a TV person because ill end up falling asleep. But Instructions Not Included is a must see movie, i was so interested because its a movie with comedy that teaches parents to appreciated every minute that your child awake. Even better, the father who raises her is not her biological father. He finds out after 7 years later after the judge reviles full custody. It all started when her mother decides to drop her daughter at her dads house in Mexico and when he opened the door she said ill be back give me 10 dollars to pay the taxi. The little girl was only a couple months old.The dad tried looking for, he even cross the USA border to head to California where she was working at a hotel. He then started working illegal to support his daughter and himself. It was not easy having no green card,he was working at a studio acting the hardest ellipsoids. For example burning himself and jumping from the 80th floor down. Who would ever do that? Only him! After 7 years later, moms decides to come back and take her little girl back to New York where she has been this whole time. Not California. They both agree during vacations she was going yo take her but she wasn't pleased.Mom ordered court to fight for custody, dad was very upset. How dare you come back and do this to me after i been the one taking her of her for 7 years.Tears started to run through my face. All her fathers friends and boss to him to revile the true, which everyone was questioning what true. This is going to be very hard specially being illegal.Father won and the mother was very upset and decided to order a DNA test that showed he was not the father. The judge then turn over and the mother got what she wanted. It was very heart broken for the father and daughter to split that she screamed at him "i don't want to leave you" and they both decided to escape before the mother came to get her. They jumped out the window and head back to Mexico. The mother was insane looking for them that she went looking for his boss to find out where they were hiding. He ended up telling her the truth. She flew to Mexico and went to the place where he always promise her daughter he was going to take her. They all gave a big hug sat by the beach and then their daughter close her eyes while they both were holding her. That was the end she ended up dieing after what her father promised her.She ended up having cancer and it was to late the medication did not help. This movie sends a few messages to fathers and mothers. Some one who is call a father is someone who takes care and supports a child it doesn't have to be biological. What mother would have the nerve to leave a child just because. This is not a TV show but it defiantly sends out real life messages.

  11. As I recently made the decision to register back into school. I’ve found myself studying in the most unusual place. Being a single mother and working full time does not leave much alone time. I decided to make my walk in closet my study area. Since it’s just my daughter and I she requires all of my devotion. It encouraged me to make my study time a game with my daughter we call it “Mommy’s in time out”. The rules of the game are no disturbance for at least thirty minutes. There is no television during this time only reading for her. To ensure it works I quiz her at the end of my thirty minutes. Also giving me the discipline I need to remain focus on the task at hand. I must admit that it has been a challenge, but with patience and routine I think it would work.

  12. An unusual place to get married would be at a basketball court or during halftime of a basketball game. The smell of sweat from the players. the cheering fans, friends and family for the bride and groom. the wedding would probably be on tv if its the NBA. maybe for example LeBron james could be the ring carrier. the wedding would be only 30n mins.

  13. When it is Valentine days an you are short on cash you will have to think of some unusual place's to go. Well at least I did last valentine day. I decided to take my date to my sisters house. My sister has a patio on her backyard an I thought if I put a table out there light a couple of candles it would still look nice. So we pulled up to my sister house went around to the side where my five year old nephew was waiting. His role was to be the host an take our orders while my sister role was to be the chef. The date started off good but the weather outside was 66 degrees Celsius plus it started to rain. But we did not let that interrupt our date. Even thought we were outside in the cold rain it was still a nice candle light dinner

  14. When I was younger, our generation wanted to be firemen, doctors, lawyers, etc. The upcoming generation have talented children who also want to excel, but are they growing up a little too fast? You hear horror stories of young children being arrested for killing other kids, or possession of weapons and drugs. Young children are acting like adults instead of being their own age, and we have explicit TV shows to blame for. For example, Love and Hip Hop, you have women fighting each other because one didn't like how the other one was addressed to or you see them dressing very provocatively just for the fame and fortune. This is what our children watch, that's what they aspire to be. Children look up to them as role models and want to follow in their footsteps. Is this what we want our children to be, with the explicit dancing, provocative clothing, gaining notoriety from arrests and other acts? I say ban these shows, because they're not contributing to our society, their only demoralizing our youth, damaging the minds of the future leaders of our world.

  15. Breaking bad is a great TV series that is about a chemistry teacher that pairs up with a delinquent college student who was once a student of Mr. White the chemistry teacher. The show projects violence and glamorizes drug dealing and the drug community. I believe that the shows that are played on television for entertainment should be only taken for what they are, entertainment. Belief that shows corrupt the youth, in my eyes is only a cop-out for bad parenting. Decisions can only be made by the person from within and what that person believes is just. Age limits are suggested to the audience for a reason and should be followed if your child or person who would be watching is influenced by others actions.

A few weeks before school started I found out about this place called Loggerhead Marinelife Center. A rescue place, where people volunteer to help these turtles and they do not charge for the entrance (your are free to donate). They had all kinds of turtles, even baby turtles, all with different stories. This place was very unusual because there was tanks outside where you could see the turtles and take pictures of them through a window on the tanks. It also has a little information center where you could learn about all the kinds of turtles, and their history. It was an amazing experience to see and know this place which is fairly close, Jupiter Beach. They also has a wonderful gift shop that was filled with everything you could think with turtles. In the gift shop they even has this tiny marbles turtle that was made in Ecuador, which I could resist to by along with other stuff. We were so glad to had found such a rare place where we now volunteer ourselves to help turtles.

  17. I have never been on a very unusual date. I think it would be very nice to go to a different place, eat at a different restaurant, and get involved with an activity I am unfamiliar with. The typical date I have been on usually involves going to some movie and eating dinner somewhere. I am bored with the typical restaurants and movie scene. An unusual date would be an interesting date that sparks my interest. I would like to learn something or perhaps do something kind of crazy. A great date for me might include changing clothes to ride some wave runners or swimming with the dolphins. Other date ideas I believe would be cool include riding go-carts, doing the state fair, or even riding horses out in the woods. I would not even be above a first date which included fishing, boating or snorkeling because I love water sports. If the date accompanying me were to be a great surfer, I would love a free surfing lesson as our first date.

  18. Love and hip hop is a show that sends mixed signals to it's audience. Some tend to think if you are wealthy you are free from every day issues. This show gives you the perfect example of the more money you have the more issues you face. It's actaully one of my favorite shows. Thay dont sugar coat anything for the cameras. But at the same time it gives people in the hip hop industry a bad look. As if they are all full of drama and issues. But on the same note it shows how some of it's cast came from no where and made something out of them selves so you just have to stickito your dreams.
